What are superfoods ?

"Superfoods" is a relatively new term used to describe a group of natural foods that are superior sources of nutrition. Green superfoods are greens with extraordinarily high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, along with compounds that can help your body metabolize fat more quickly. Green superfoods are rich in proteins, phytochemicals, and healthy bacteria. These combine to make green superfoods great to help you build muscle, restore tissues, improve digestive system functioning, and boost immune system health.

Some fruits and nuts can be considered superfoods because they are extremely high in anti-oxidants, which fight off harmful substances in your body called free radicals. These substances cause detrimental chain reactions in your body that damage cells, leading to aging and age-related diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Free radicals are increased by exposure to or consumption of unhealthy substances like tobacco, trans fats, or other pollutants.

Bee products have been identified as superfoods lately, but this is something that has been known by ancient cultures since the dawn of time. Ancient Egyptions, Indians, and Babylonians used honey for a variety of medicinal purposes. We rediscovered the benefits of honey when it was found that a group of beekeepers in Russia who ate honey regularly frequently lived to be over 100 years old.

Seaweed is a natural superfood that is chock-full of calcium. It contains much more calcium than milk and beef. Seaweed is able to absorb important nutrients from the ocean water, and has a chemical makeup that is similar to the plasma of our blood. Thus, seaweed is especially beneficial in cleansing our circulatory system.

Herbs are another superfood that has been used by many cultures. Herbs can be used to balance the body out, allowing the body to heal itself more effectively. They can often replace nutrients you may not receive because of an inadequate diet or environment.
